How AI Is Changing The World of PR

It seems like everyone I talk to has a different opinion of AI from love to hate. And that’s among those who truly understand its power and how to use it.  No matter what, it’s here to stay so we all should just embrace it and respect it. But what exactly is AI’s role in PR, and how can we harness its power to elevate public relations benefits?

1. Streamlining Media Monitoring

One of the most time-consuming tasks for PR professionals is creating public relations media lists, tracking media coverage, analyzing its impact, and responding quickly. AI-powered tools like Meltwater and Cision make this process seamless by offering:

  • Real-Time Alerts: Monitoring keywords, brands, and competitors to provide instant updates.

  • Sentiment Analysis: Automatically identifying whether coverage is positive, negative, or neutral.

  • Trend Identification: Highlighting emerging patterns and themes in media coverage.

2. Enhancing Audience Targeting

AI excels at processing vast amounts of data to uncover audience behaviors, preferences, and trends. This is one of my top public relations tips for small business. For PR campaigns, this means:

  • Refined Targeting: AI can segment audiences with precision, ensuring your message reaches the right people at the right time.

  • Predictive Analytics: There are tools that use AI to anticipate how audiences will respond, allowing PR pros to optimize campaigns in advance.

3. Automating Repetitive Tasks

Administrative tasks can drain a PR professional’s time and energy, taking away from more the ability to focus on creative strategy and relationship-building. AI helps by automating:

  • Press Release Distribution: Tools like Prowly streamline the process of sending releases to targeted journalists.

  • Media List Management: AI updates contact databases automatically, ensuring outreach lists stay relevant.

  • Content Scheduling: Social media platforms like Hootsuite and Buffer use AI to schedule posts at optimal times for maximum engagement.

4. Powering Content Creation

AI tools like ChatGPT and Jasper AI are changing the way we create content by offering:

  • First Drafts: AI can draft press releases, blogs, and social media posts based on provided inputs.

  • Headline Suggestions: Tools can optimize titles for SEO and engagement.

  • Content Customization: AI adjusts tone and style to match the target audience, making communication more effective.

*I have to add a caveat here. Don’t fully trust AI. You must always proof and adapt the information to your own tone and style, and verify the content.

5. Crisis Management and Risk Mitigation

In a crisis, timing is everything. If you’re wondering how to handle public relations crisis, AI helps PR teams stay ahead by:

  • Monitoring Social Media in Real-Time: Detecting early signs of negative sentiment.

  • Predicting Crisis Escalation: Analyzing data to assess the potential impact of an issue.

  • Suggesting Responses: AI-powered tools can recommend appropriate messaging to address concerns swiftly and effectively.

6. Measuring ROI with Precision

Proving the value of PR has always been a challenge. AI simplifies this by:

  • Data Analysis: Aggregating data from multiple sources, such as media coverage, social media, and web traffic.

  • Custom Reports: Automatically generating insights tailored to specific KPIs.

  • Predictive Success Metrics: Using past performance to forecast future campaign results.

While AI offers incredible benefits, it’s not a replacement for the human element in PR. Building relationships, understanding nuanced emotions, and crafting authentic stories require empathy and creativity—skills only humans can provide. AI is best viewed as a partner that enhances, rather than replaces, the expertise of PR professionals.
